CEPESE CEPESE | CENTRO DE ESTUDOS DA POPULAÇÃO, ECONOMIA E SOCIEDADE

Population and Foresight

The main goal of this group is to contribute to the study of the history of the Portuguese population and understand trends, rhythms and characteristics of the Portuguese people, combining a wide perspective of the historical time with the specific reading of the Historical Demography and Demographic Analysis. Coordination of Teresa Rodrigues.

It is our aim to carry out an exhaustive bibliographic search on previous works and carry out a thorough research of printed sources and documentary collections, using, whenever possible, the references mentioned by different authors. In short, our aims are the production of knowledge in a little studied domain within the scope of social sciences, promoting a better knowledge of the great trend lines that marked the history of the Portuguese population, beliefs and ideologies, in order to characterize the population from the collective behaviour point of view regarding life and death, integrating and explaining those characteristics in a wider context of daily life, in a perspective of respect for group differences, in order to establish global guiding models of the Portuguese population.

This wider panorama allows highlighting long stays, by identifying regional factors and differences, characterizing and contextualizing behaviours of the Portuguese population, within the scope of the European reality, from a wider and more diversified chronological perspective both in its aims and methodology (demography, historical demography, foresight, planning, equipment programming). Finally, the Group aims at publishing and making available relevant information concerning demographic information, by creating and updating the bibliography on the theme, in order to make the search easier on related subjects, an online database that allows collecting and processing information in different levels of breakdown of volumes and microdemographic variables, and the publication of work documents with thematic syntheses.
