Introduction

Within the scope of its aims and purposes, there is in CEPESE, since 1996, a Research Unit in the History field, under the same name, coordinated by Fernando de Sousa.

As a R&D Unit, CEPESE is dependent on the FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, whose main activity is regulated by the rules established by the Ministry for Science, Technology and Higher Education, with 109 PhD researchers belonging to twenty Portuguese Higher Education Institutions, besides 44 non-PhD researchers.

The R&D Unit is periodically evaluated by the FCT, through an international panel of experts, and in the last evaluation process (2007/2008) was rated Very Good, the highest rating given to a History research unit.
