CEPESE is an inter-university research centre established by the University of Porto and the Foundation Eng.º António de Almeida, with the main objective of researching and divulging themes directly or indirectly related with the History of Population, Economy and Society.

Our research is carried out in the fields of Cultural Heritage, Economic History, Social History, International Relations, Demography and Prospective, supporting the achievement of studies, propitiating the discussion and debate of the research results in seminars and regular scientific meetings, opened to specialists but also the general public, particularly university students, which we try to initiate in the world of scientific research.

It is considered as a R&D unit by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) since 1996, gathering researchers from more than 20 universities. CEPESE, at the present time, has over 250 associates, of which more than 100 are PhDs. In the last international evaluation (2008), the Unit was classified as “Very Good”.

This Centre has its own social bodies: General Assembly, Executive Board, Fiscal Council and Scientific Council. Furthermore, CEPESE has a Counselling Commission, composed of 14 full professors from Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French and Brazilian universities.

CEPESE operates in an independent building from the University of Porto, which includes a full library. The Centre is has its own website (www.cepese.pt).
