Prime Ministers of Portugal (1821-2015)

This project aims to produce a research work on the Heads of Government and Prime Ministers of Portugal since the beginning of the parliamentary regime in Portugal, institutionalized with the Liberal Revolution of 1820.

In summary, this Research Project intends to make known the biographies of the politicians who have held such functions; their most relevant political activity, as well as the major national issues that emerged during their mandates; and to publish texts of their own – interventions, excerpts from works or articles – or from other authors that help to characterize their profiles or their civic and political concerns.

This project also comprises a study on the origins of the position; the competencies and duties of Prime Ministers in each historical period, according to the constitutional and legislative texts in force; and the analysis of the form of acquisition and duration of the mandates and the representativeness of the electoral body in the cases in which there was an election. Their socio-professional characterization will also be addressed, studying elements such as their birthplace, age, academic background, professional career and political career.
