CEPESE CEPESE | CENTRO DE ESTUDOS DA POPULAÇÃO, ECONOMIA E SOCIEDADE

Research Unit

Within the scope of its object and purposes, CEPESE hosts a Research Unit (UI) since 1996, whose activity is governed by the norms established by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education, comprising nearly a hundred doctoral researchers. Currently, the Research Unit is coordinated by Professor Doctor Cláudia Toriz Ramos.

Recently redirecting its main scientific area to Political Science and International Relations, albeit maintaining an open transdisciplinary relationship with other Social and Human Sciences, our Research Unit does not renounce CEPESE's longstanding research tradition in the field of History; on the contrary, it aims to bridge the gap between Contemporary History and other Social and Human Sciences, as well as between Heritage, Identity, and Memory studies and the world of politics.

As a Research Unit, CEPESE brings together nearly fifty doctoral researchers from different Portuguese higher education institutions, as well as several doctoral students, as it also functions as a hosting institution for researchers and fellows, offering all the material and scientific support conditions for research, from the support of its library to the guidance by senior researchers with vast experience.

CEPESE also hosts foreign researchers who are conducting research within the scope of master's, doctoral, and post-doctoral studies. Thus, any national or foreign researcher who wishes to develop their research project in Portugal can contact CEPESE to obtain all the necessary information for their accommodation.

For the period 2025-2029, the Research Unit is thematically structured into three Research Groups:

Political and Humanitarian Studies

This Group aims to contribute to advanced research on political systems and forms of governance, both nationally and internationally, preferably articulated through international partnership projects and disseminated in English. The research group will prioritize, in its work within international cooperation, the study and action in the field of the Lusophone community, also valuing scientific dissemination in Portuguese, as well as deepening ongoing studies on European integration, namely in the field of institutional processes, European and international security, and cooperation for development.

Heritage and Cultural Identity Policies

This Group intends to study Identity, Memory, and Cultural Heritage, especially of Portuguese origin, as well as migrations and their impacts on history, heritage, and culture, crossing studies of Contemporary History with Political Science, seeking historical research references with international applicability and impact on current society.

Public Administration Policies

This Group aims to address specific areas of public policies, producing applied research based on the fundamentals of Political Science, seeking to produce research references with international applicability and impact on society. In this Group, issues such as health and welfare policies, taxation and accounting policies, and the role of information systems will be addressed, among others.
