The Dicionário da Língua Portuguesa (Dictionary of the Portuguese Language), by António de Morais Silva (hence commonly referred to as "Morais Dictionary"), in its original edition, from 1789, has as its full title Diccionario da Lingua Portugueza composto pelo Padre D. Rafael Bluteau, reformado, e accrescentado por Antonio de Moraes Silva, natural do Rio de Janeiro (Dictionary of the Portuguese Language composed by Father D. Rafael Bluteau, retired, and enhanced by Antonio de Moraes Silva, born in Rio de Janeiro). This work, considered by several experts as "the beginning of the modern Portuguese dictionary" and a factor of linguistic harmony and synergy between Brazil and Portugal, constitutes a fundamental instrument in supporting the interpretation of documentary sources from the 17th and 18th centuries, namely with regard to words that have evolved in terms of meaning or writing, or that are not used anymore.
Although available on several digital platforms, along with its successive editions – the 3rd edition, dated 1823, was the last one by António de Morais Silva, but the work kept its authorship until the 10th and final edition –, the access is usually slow and complex. For this reason, CEPESE decided to make this first edition available on its website, in order to allow a much faster and more intuitive access to all users, including the possibility of copying contents directly to text editing software.
