Military Orders: chronicles and chroniclers

The aim of this project was the publishing of works by Friar Jerónimo Román about the Portuguese Military Orders, as for example "Historia da Ínclita Cavalaria de Cristo na Coroa dos Reinos de Portugal", among others.

The aim of this project was the publishing of works by Friar Jerónimo Román about the Portuguese Military Orders, namely:

  • Historia da Ínclita Cavalaria de Cristo na Coroa dos Reinos de Portugal
  • Historia da Ordem de Avis
  • Historia da Ínclita Cavalaria de Santiago na Coroa de Portugal

A Spanish author of the 16th century, Román was a Friar of the Order of St. Augustine and stayed in Portugal for some years, namely in the 1560s and later in the 1580s, when Filipe II was proclaimed King of Portugal in the Courts of Tomar. He lived in the Convento da Graça, in Lisbon, the headquarters of the Order in which he professed.

The fact that he lived in Portugal allowed him to get a deeper knowledge of the Portuguese history, as well as of sources about which he would later write essential texts for understanding the history of the previously mentioned Portuguese militia.  A man with a great acknowledged work, and besides the specificity of the three above-mentioned chronicles, he also writes other works of a more general character, where, nonetheless, there are plenty of references to the Military Orders, including the monumental "Republicas del Mundo".
