A Theoretical Framework to study Civil Society Functions in Macedonia
This paper analysis civil society as a fundamental element in transition processes, seeking to understand the democratic difficulties that many post-transition societies deal with, and how civil society can contribute to the consolidation of democracy. The main research question guiding this study is: What has been the role of civil society in Macedonia’s democratization process?
Drawing on theories of democratization and theories of civil society, a conceptual framework is outlined in an attempt to contribute to our understanding of how and under which conditions civil society contributes to democracy in multi-ethnic societies, like the Macedonian one. This, however, also implies an understanding of the main problems with which many post-transition societies are confronted with.
