In the essay A Hundred Years ago - The Republic, Vitorino Magalhães Godinho presents a lucid reflection on the Republic in Portugal since its establishment in 1910, questioning its origins and providing an explanatory reading for the crash of the First Republic (1910-1926 ), the evolution and extinction of the Estado Novo Dictatosrhip (1926-1974) and the genesis of the Third Republic with the Military Revolution of 1974, analyzing the vicissitudes that Democracy in Portugal went through until 2010. This is one of the last works, until now unpublished, by Vitorino Magalhães Godinho, one of the most notable, influential and fruitful historians of the Portuguese 20th century, who wrote it on the occasion of the centenary of the Republic.

In addition, in order to make the Historian and the Man better known, this work also presents testimonies from researchers who worked very closely with Vitorino Magalhães Godinho, the testimony of one of his daughters, a summary of the main aspects of his life and work and a comprehensive list of his vast scientific production.

A leading figure in contemporary historiography, author of more than a hundred studies, a brilliant intellectual, an active citizen concerned with his country and the world in which he lived and that he never stopped questioning, this publication thus emerges as a fair tribute to Vitorino Magalhães Godinho in the year that marks the centenary of his birth.
