Edited by three CEPESE researchers – Cláudia Toriz Ramos, Paulo Vila Maior and Isabel Costa Leite –, the work The European Parliament and the European Elections: Essays on Democratic Legitimacy has just been published. This book results from the intersection of a research project on the transnationalization of political parties in the European Union with the 2019 European elections, debating the democratic legitimacy of the European Parliament, its visibility within the public sphere and its role in the political sphere. As the European Parliament is the main EU institution for the direct relations with the European citizens, the debate on its role is fundamental, not only during election years, but also during its terms of office. The link between the national and European levels of governance is also addressed, in terms of interparliamentary relations, under the principle of subsidiarity. The book also discusses, in the perspective of "legitimacy by results", the role of the European Parliament in current crucial areas, such as economic governance, domestic/international security and migration and refugee issues.

Note: due to publication rights, we only have available the first pages of the book, which can be consulted at CEPESE’s Library.
