Presentation

In 2020, Portugal commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Liberal Revolution of Porto of 1820, which definitively marked the political evolution of the country and the identity of the city, structured around the liberal matrix. Despite the numerous studies on Portuguese Liberalism that have been taking place inside and outside Portugal for decades, it is important to revisit the theme and to carry out innovative readings about the Porto Revolution, as well as its background and repercussions in the city, the country and internationally.

To this end, the Eng. António de Almeida Foundation and CEPESE – Research Centre for Population, Economy and Society Studies, will hold the International Seminar The Liberal Revolution of Porto of 1820 - Human Rights and Political and Economic Legacy, which will take place in the October 1st and 2nd, 2020, in Porto, in the Auditorium of the Eng. António de Almeida Foundation, with the collaboration of Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto, Fernando Pessoa University and Lusófona do Porto University.

To this end, we are calling national and foreign researchers, who, for two days, will reflect on the central aspects of the new liberal order, its material and symbolic practices, namely in the political, economic, legal and human rights fields, and its importance for the construction of Contemporary Portugal.
