The "Brazilian" Houses in the Municipality of Paredes

Alda Neto

Município de Paredes / Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Paredes
2021

Supported by the Municipal Council of Paredes, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Paredes and CEPESE, and at a time when the theme of international migrations is constantly addressed by historiography, this work is extremely important for the analysis of successful cases of men and women who left an economically poor country and later returned with their wealth. These emigrants, called "returning Brazilians", left very young, sometimes still as children, travelling to a country where the only known element was the language and some family members or friends, and returned as adults to a country that remained agricultural and little industrialized. This success materialized in the affirmation of a personal and material identity in their places of origin, which was reflected in the heritage they built, restored or preserved: churches, schools, roads, gardens, but above all their houses, the main object of this study.

Nota: Due to publishing rights, only the first pages of the work are available. The book is available at CEPESE's Library.
