This study on the Franciscans of Calais/Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady in Portugal between 1868 and 2018 seeks to fill a gap in the History of the Church in Contemporary Portugal, concerning their origins and the extraordinary activity carried out by these nuns in Portugal and in other parts of the world. Basing their spirituality in the Franciscan movement, these Sisters, “a living presence of Christian charity”, in a “constant call for fraternal communion within the People of God”, known how to maintain the family spirit, closeness, joy, simplicity and missionary spirit, so dear to the founders of the Congregation, Father Duchenne and Sister Louise Mabille, in accordance with the best traditions of its long history.
